A reminder that Rowing ACT’s guidance for winter rowing safety commences on 01 May, through until 30 September.
As a refresher, please find following a notice regarding CLRC’s winter rowing safety policy:
On Water Safety. The rowing environment presents inherent risks, such as capsize, drowning and collision. In regards to on water safety, the following is to apply:
a. As per Rowing ACT guidance, from 01 May to 30 September annually, it is strongly recommended that single sculls (1x) and pairs (2-) are not rowed without another vessel (rowing boat or tinny) present in their immediate vicinity at all times (known as the ‘four oar’ rule).
(1) CLRC encourages compliance with the ‘four oar’ rule as much as is practicable. Single sculls (1x) and pairs (2-) should only proceed independently if the rower/s are experienced, confident in their abilities, have a good understanding of Lake Traffic Flow and are conscious of the prevailing weather conditions.
b. Boats are not to launch when the visibility is less than 100m due to any factor.
c. All boats on the water between sunset and sunrise are to have appropriate lights fitted. Appropriate lights are also to be fitted if the visibility is obscured by any factor, such as fog or haze.
d. All boats are to follow the Lake Burley Griffin Traffic Flow at all times.
Lastly, a reminder that any capsizes during the winter period are a reportable incident (regardless if there are injuries or not) – please make all initial incident reports via Signal/text/call to 0417 528 254 ASAP after an incident.
